Voice Box

When you sing, you use the part of the respiratory tract called the larynx or commonly known as the voice box. It is found in the neck and is a tubular, hollow tube which is joined to  the top of your windpipe. It is about 2 inches long and made of cartilage. Besides voice production, you also use the larynx when you swallow and breathe. When you sing, muscles will pull the vocal chords together and the air going through these chords creates the vibrations which you hear as sounds. Higher sounds are produced if the vocal chords are shorter and the vibrations are faster. During puberty, the vocal chords and the voice box continue to grow in both the male and the female gender. The boys’ voices drop and are deep sounding and can protrude out as ” Adam’s Apple”.

Suitable exercises and voice techniques will be taught to the student to warm up and also help improve her voice.  The correct posture, vowel shaping and breathing all contribute to the sound which comes out. A solid vocal technique will assist the student to sing with stamina and strength and in a smooth continuous fashion. It will also help her voice to be more flexible and to build strength. The student will need to learn how to travel from the bottom to the top ranges of her voice without any breaks or changes in the tone of the voice.
