Piano

There are two main types of pianos, the acoustic and the electric or digital piano. Buying a piano is a big investment in terms of space and finance. A real acoustic piano has the beautiful sound and touch which cannot be duplicated by the electric piano. Many people have been moved and inspired by the performances of musicians using the piano. However, the upkeep of an acoustic piano is higher as you need to tune it at least twice a year to maintain the piano in a good condition. The soundboard and the strings in the acoustic piano are protected by a wooden casing. This piano has 52 white keys and 36 black keys, a total of 88 black and white keys.

Types of Acoustic pianos
Vertical or Upright Piano : The strings and the frame are vertical, this piano is more compact compared with the Grand Piano. The upright piano projects a warm sound , is popular and usually costs less. The hammers of the upright piano strike out horizontally and therefore take slightly longer time to return  to its’ original resting  position compared  to the hammers of the Grand Piano. From the backside,  the wooden reinforcements and the support base of the soundboard are visible.

Grand Piano
The Grand Piano is expensive, majestic looking and also the largest type of piano. It has horizontal soundboards from the front to the back, thus sometimes referred to as the horizontal piano. It has 88 keys which are made from pure ivory or wood coated in ivory with a retractable cover sliding or folding down on the keys. The Grand piano has a very responsive key action and produces fine tones compared with the Upright piano, it is a great investment.

IF you need to practice in an environment where you need to keep the noise down, then an electric piano might be a better choice. It has headphone jacks so you can practice without disturbing anyone. The headphones are able to block the outside noise so that you can concentrate on your practice. The advantage of having twin  headphone sockets is to allow the student and the teacher to listen together when the music is played. The built in metronome in the digital piano with simple controls  makes it easier for the student to develop her sense of rhythm and timekeeping. The beat and tempo can easily be adjusted to enable the student to master the piece she is learning.

In some digital pianos, there are built-in recording features which allows you to record your performance and to play it back to listen. This will allow you to resolve problems with melody and timing and also to pick out and improve on existing problems. With some models of digital pianos, you can transfer the music you played to a computer and print it out as a sheet music. You can also record new ideas if you are interested in music composition. The electric piano has many different types of sounds that you can experiment with to make the practice more interesting. There are many Apps in the digital piano which can help with practice, performance, aural training and even music theory.

There is no tuning required for a digital piano as it does not have hammers and strings, it’s maintenance free. In order to recreate the sound of an acoustic piano, quality speakers are used and placed in strategic positions. To produce a realistic playing experience, precision weighted keys are used in the digital piano. The digital piano has many benefits which are impossible with the acoustic piano.
