Most children are more familiar with instruments like the piano or guitar than the violin. The negative comment that the violin is a difficult instrument to learn to play has discouraged some children to take up this instrument. Parents can introduce the violin and show them the many different styles of violin music which is available for them to learn to play in the future. Of course, a good and flexible teacher is important to teach the children good violin techniques and make the lessons fun and interesting.
Sizes : Violins are made in various sizes.
Full size for older children—4/4
Fractional sizes for children—- 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64.
The student needs to purchase a violin before she starts her lessons. The standard package includes the violin, bow and case. Ensure that the case is sturdy enough to protect the violin. Other things to get include a shoulder rest, some rosin for the bow, a music stand and extra violin strings. The shoulder rest is a pad which sits on the student’s shoulder underneath the violin. It is easier to hold the violin and shift it into higher positions and makes it more comfortable to play if the student has the shoulder rest. The rosin assists the bow to grip the string as the bow hair is slippery. The student should consider getting a practice mute if she lives in an environment where excessive noise might disturb the neighbours.
During the lesson, the student is taught to set up the music book on the music stand. She will learn how to tighten the bow hair by turning the screws at the end clockwise. The student need to continue practising till she can produce clear notes on the fingerboard and also how to position the violin.Once she has mastered playing one string at a time without hitting the other strings, she will be taught to play the other strings. It is essential to apply the right amount of pressure and the correct position to produce a clear note. The student will also learn scales which is a collection of notes that ascend and descend in a set pattern
