Great pieces of music often create a desire in adults to start taking up an instrument. Adults are generally more serious when they take up music lessons because they want to do it and not because they are compelled to do so. With this type of motivation, even with hurdles like an aging brain and stiff hands it can be done. It is never too late to learn to play an instrument.
Adults do have some advantages over children when it comes down to taking music lessons.
1. They want to succeed and they have the focus, determination and discipline to make themselves practice.
2.They have listened to different genre of music, with this exposure they are better able to relate to the music they are learning to play.
3. For adults, they are able to grasp abstract concepts much faster and know how to apply them in different places in music.
4. Adults tend to more analytical and methodical and can see the connection between practice and the art of mastering the instrument they are learning .
5. They have better practice habits compared to children and are able to pick up things in the music which the children aren’t able to do so.
Learning to play an instrument can train your brain to be sharper and to stay alert and for the adults this can mean a better quality of life as the brain is more active. An additional benefit of music lessons is that music reduces stress, generates a positive mood which in turn enables the adults to have improved cognitive function and sleep. This in turn will enhance brain function.
For the adult students, fear of failure and ridicule are big issues. However, they tend to have supportive family and friends and have a great chance of succeeding in what they do. It is always rewarding and empowering to learn new things especially for adults.
